Protesters block Blount Street in front of Executive Mansion

RALEIGH – Protesters objecting to House Bill 318 are sitting in the middle of Blount Street in the capital city, chained together and chanting in Spanish and English.

Chanting “we pay taxes too” and “this is the beginning,” protesters line the sidewalk holding signs that accuse the measure of targeting immigrants. The bill was signed by Gov. Pat McCrory earlier this week and prohibits municipalities from issuing identification cards to undocumented immigrants.

“I’ve been living here for 12 years undocumented,” said one woman who did not want to be identified. “What if if was stopped driving my kids to school without ID?”

Supporters of the bill say tactics like the display this afternoon are diversions from the real meaning behind bills like this one.

“This bill shouldn’t be necessary,” said Ricky Diaz, senior adviser to the N.C. Republican Party. “Isn’t it a shame that we need bills that simply reinforce existing laws?”
