Moped insurance requirement headed to Governor

mopeddogRALEIGH, N.C. – A bill that would require moped drivers to have insurance just passed the Senate, sending it to Governor McCrory for final approval.  The House passed the measure in April.

HB148 would require that moped owners carry a minimum level of liability insurance and register their vehicles, paying the same registration fees as motorcycles.  Bill sponsors say the costs to moped drivers could range from $80 to around $380, depending on their driving history.  Drivers who have points on their license or a DWI conviction will pay significantly more for insurance, or may be denied it entirely.

If the Governor signs the bill into law, the registration requirement is already set to take effect next month, while the insurance requirement would not be in place until July of 2016.
